Six men, identified in the caption as veterans of the First World War, posed before the White House on November 14, 1921, to ask the president to free federal prisoners jailed for opposing the war. The caption names them as D. Loman, John J. Kelley, N.M. Holderman, Geo. H. Mallon, Clayton K. Stack, and Sam Dreset. Under the Espionage and Sedition Acts, many war critics had been sentenced to federal prison, and Warren Harding, in office since March 1921, was weighing clemency; he commuted Eugene Debs's sentence that December. The photograph was made by the National Photo Company, whose Washington record of these years is a valuable source for the period.
