Made from the State, War and Navy Building, this view looks across to the western side of the White House, where the mansion's gardens and fountain sit close to the executive offices. That neighboring building, finished in the 1880s in a French Second Empire style, housed the departments that handled the nation's diplomacy and military affairs, so the photographer's position places the viewer at the center of federal work. The picture is part of the Brady-Handy Collection, a body of 19th-century photographs of Washington and its public figures, and it shows the grounds as a working complex rather than only a ceremonial façade.
