The east wing shown here dates from the 1902 remodeling of the White House, which McKim, Mead & White carried out during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. That work aimed to move executive offices out of the family residence and give the presidency more room to operate. The photograph is credited to the Brady-Handy studio, a Washington firm whose work covers the capital in the decades after the Civil War, though the caption card gives no date. The catalog data is unverified, so the picture is most useful for its architectural detail rather than for pinning down a specific moment.
