Printed on a stereo card, this view of the White House belongs to the stereograph craze of the early 1900s, when paired images viewed through a hand-held lens brought distant places into parlors. The executive mansion had been rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, and this exterior shows it in the years when Theodore Roosevelt occupied it, from 1901 to 1909. The card carries a U.S. Copyright Office notation, a reminder that such views were registered and sold as commercial products.
