The orange trees in this stereograph stood inside the conservatories of the White House, a detail that sets it apart from the building views on the same board. Ingersoll View Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, issued the card around 1903, when stereographs of Washington landmarks were popular parlor items that viewers examined through a hand viewer for a three-dimensional effect. The back of the card notes that the conservatory was demolished in 1902, so the picture records a glasshouse that no longer stood by the time it was printed. Greenhouses at the executive mansion supplied flowers and fruit for the household and for official entertaining.
