A telegraph operator sits at work in one of the White House offices in this view, dating to about 1909, when wire messages were still a core part of how the executive branch communicated. The photograph was made by Clinedinst, a Washington studio that recorded government buildings, officials and daily work in the capital during the early 1900s. Telegraph traffic from the building carried official messages to newspapers, cabinet departments and distant cities, and the telephone and wireless were only beginning to take over that role. The record comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so the exact room and date remain uncertain.
