Calvin Coolidge poses with a sidecar motorcycle in front of the White House in this 1924 view, a lighthearted moment from a presidency better known for its restraint. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's officials, buildings and events in the early twentieth century. Coolidge had taken office after Warren Harding's death in 1923 and ran for a full term that year. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes across the image, marks of the coatings on the glass breaking down over the decades.
