Cosme de la Torriente, Cuba's ambassador to the United States, appears in this glass negative at the White House in January 1925. He represented Havana while Calvin Coolidge was president, and relations between the two countries rested heavily on trade, especially sugar. The image came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, visiting dignitaries and city landmarks in the early twentieth century. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of its coating, which add to its worn, period character.
