A group of Republican women from Monmouth County, New Jersey, posed with Senator Walter Edge at the White House on January 30, 1925, and this small glass negative preserves the visit. Delegations like this were a familiar sight in Washington in the 1920s, after women had gained the vote in 1920 and were building political organizations at the county and state level. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials, visitors and public buildings for decades. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
