A delegation from the National Women's Trade Union League of America is received at the White House by President Herbert Hoover on May 6, 1929, only weeks after he took office. The League, founded in 1903, pressed for better wages, shorter hours and safer working conditions for women, and its members often lobbied Washington for labor laws. The photograph was made by the Washington, D.C., studio of Scherer, and it captures a moment when the new administration was first hearing directly from organized labor.
