A football squad from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, posed at the White House on November 29, 1924, a visit that places this team in the capital during the presidency of Calvin Coolidge. Visiting athletes and student groups were a regular part of Washington life in that decade, and the White House grounds made a natural backdrop for such group portraits. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the city's public life from the early 1900s into the 1930s. Its glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging emulsion, which add to its character as a document of the period.
