Rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, the White House had been the home of presidents since John Adams moved in during 1800. This 1927 glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that made commercial views of the capital. The library devised the title and assigned the date by comparing it with neighboring negatives, so the exact day of exposure is unknown. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
