Held at the executive mansion on June 27, 1929, this reception brought veterans onto the White House grounds only a few months after Herbert Hoover took office. Gatherings like this placed former servicemen at the center of national ceremony, and the event is recorded here on a glass negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's public life in the early twentieth century, made the exposure. Look for the streaks and clouding across the glass, which result from deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
