Veterans of Foreign Wars members, led by a commander-in-chief named Karling and a commander identified in the record as Robert E. Wood, posed at the White House in this glass negative from about 1920. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was formed by former soldiers of overseas conflicts, and in the years after the First World War its members pressed Congress for pensions, hospital care, and other benefits for returning servicemen. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's official life, made the image, so it captures a moment when veterans' groups were gaining political visibility. Faint streaks across the plate reflect the age of the original coating.
