Sheep grazing on the White House grounds is the subject here, a sight that was more practical than ceremonial. During the First World War, when mowing crews were in short supply and lawn upkeep was a concern, flocks were kept on the lawns to keep the grass short, and the Wilson administration was known for this arrangement. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company around 1920, records that rural scene at the center of the nation's most famous residence. Its title comes from the company's own notes, which the Library of Congress has not verified. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass, the result of age on the original coatings, are worth noticing as signs of the negative's history.
