This glass negative records Irish pickets at the White House around 1920, during the Anglo-Irish War, when Irish nationalists in the United States pressed Washington to recognize an independent Ireland. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington street life and public events for decades, made the image. Its title and date come from the company's own notes and have not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect deterioration in the original coating, which affects some of the finer detail.
