This glass negative shows the iron gates of the White House, the executive mansion's public face on Pennsylvania Avenue, dated to about 1921. It came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that sold views of the capital to visitors and built a large body of street and monument pictures in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the slow breakdown of the original coating, a common trait of glass plates of this age that is worth keeping in mind when judging the image.
