Three men stand outside the White House in this small glass negative, and the people, not the building, are the subject here. The picture came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that photographed the city's streets, monuments and government buildings for sale to visitors in the early twentieth century. The date on the negative sleeve, March 22, 1921, is unverified, though it would fall just after Warren G. Harding took office as president. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
