Three men with cameras stand outside the White House in this glass negative, a detail that sets it apart from the building-front views that dominate this board. It belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the output of a Washington studio that photographed the capital's landmarks and visitors in the early twentieth century. The negative is dated between 1909 and 1923 based on others in the same group, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes, the result of the original coatings deteriorating over time.
