Few images from the suffrage campaign capture its confrontational edge as directly as this 1917 photograph of pickets taken into custody at the White House. The National Woman's Party had begun picketing the gates that year, holding banners that questioned President Wilson's commitment to democracy, and the arrests that followed drew wide newspaper attention. Women who were jailed in the District of Columbia later described harsh conditions, and their treatment helped turn public opinion toward the national suffrage amendment, which Congress passed in 1919.
