Few pictures on this board tie a single scene so directly to the fight for the vote as a group of suffragists at the White House. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption data the Bain News Service noted on the negatives, which has not been independently verified, so the exact moment is uncertain. The setting does fit a well-documented campaign: beginning in January 1917, members of the National Woman's Party held silent vigils at the White House gates to press President Wilson for a federal suffrage amendment. Bain's staff photographed Washington life across these years, so the negative offers a working-press view of that protest.
