The White House is the only record here of the building itself, and this glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the press-photo archive of the Bain News Service, which operated in New York from the early 1900s through the 1910s and sent pictures of national news to newspapers across the country. The record gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the Bain files cover the Washington executive mansion over many years, and their prints of it show the building as the President's residence and working office during that era. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working format of press photographers before film became common, which is why their images are sharp in detail and carry the look of the period.
