White House Landing, on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, served as the Union army's main supply point during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, and this view looks down the river toward the vessels that carried food, ammunition, and equipment to George B. McClellan's troops. The landing took its name from a plantation once connected to the family of Mary Custis Lee. David B. Woodbury made the picture on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried, which makes field views from this period far less common than studio portraits.
