Crowds of ordinary visitors being let into the White House are the subject here, though the title is a working label supplied by the photo agency rather than a verified caption. The Bain News Service, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain, sold news pictures to newspapers in the early decades of the twentieth century, and its negatives record everyday scenes of public life in Washington. Public access to the executive mansion has always depended on presidential policy, with tours and open days changing from one administration to the next. The glass plate is also worth noticing as an older process that gave photographers crisp detail on a fragile base.
