A Baldwin piano being pried from its crate and carried toward the doors of the White House anchors this scene, which the record dates only to about 1921. The picture came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the city's buildings, streets and events in the early twentieth century. Baldwin, a Cincinnati firm founded in 1862, was among the best-known American piano makers of its day. The photograph shows the ordinary labor behind furnishing a working household, with movers and a crate in the foreground.
