A cyanotype copy of the second-floor plan of the White House is a rare survival of the executive mansion's interior layout from the years between 1889 and 1906. Cyanotypes were a cheap, reliable way to copy architectural drawings, producing white lines on a deep blue ground, so offices and builders could circulate plans without redrawing them by hand. The dates place the sheet just before the major 1902 renovation, when McKim, Mead & White reorganized the building's rooms and added working space, making this plan a useful record of how the upper floor was arranged before those changes.
