White House Landing was a riverside spot on the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia, tied to the old Custis family plantation. This view shows a camp run by the Michigan and Pennsylvania Relief Association, a volunteer group that gathered supplies for soldiers from its home states. The picture dates to 1861, before the landing became a major Union supply base in 1862. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the wet collodion glass negative, which now belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War collection.
