Steamboats and the Quartermaster Corps are the subjects named in this view of the landing at White House, on the Pamunkey River in Virginia. The site was a Union supply point in the last years of the Civil War, where goods moved from river vessels onto rail and wagon lines bound for the front. The land had belonged to the family of Mary Custis Lee, wife of Robert E. Lee, and the name still recalls the plantation house that once stood above the water. The record's date range rests on a print made later from the original negative, so the picture is best read as a wartime depot rather than a single moment.
