Paddle steamers and the Quartermaster Corps' river traffic set this view of White House Landing apart from the other pictures of the site. The landing on the Pamunkey River served as a Union supply base, and the caption tracings point to side-wheel steamboats moving stores there under quartermaster oversight. The landing had also been the former estate of the White House plantation, tied to the Custis family and to Robert E. Lee's wife, Mary Custis Lee. The date of about 1864 places it during the Overland Campaign, when the landing was central to feeding Union armies in central Virginia.
