This photograph shows the surgeons of the 4th Division, 9th Corps, posed at Broadway Landing on the James River in Virginia in 1864. That summer, Union forces were besieging Petersburg, and Broadway Landing served as a supply and medical hub for the army. The image was made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each glass plate within minutes, so making a picture in the field was a demanding task. The photographer, James F. Gibson, worked as one of the Civil War photographers associated with Mathew Brady's studio. His portrait of the medical officers offers a rare view of the men who treated wounded soldiers during the campaign.
