Few photographs from the Petersburg siege put faces to the men who tended the wounded and buried the dead, and this one does exactly that by showing the chaplains of the Ninth Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The image is a wet collodion glass negative made in 1864, when Union forces had bogged down in trench warfare outside Petersburg, Virginia, after the Overland Campaign. Chaplains in that period ministered to soldiers facing constant danger and heavy casualties, and portraits like this were often made for regimental and family use. The print was later issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company and catalogued by the Library of Congress.
