Judson Kilpatrick, the cavalry general pictured here, was photographed at Culpeper, Virginia, a town that served as a major Union staging ground in 1863. The image is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, a method that required photographers to coat and expose plates quickly, which makes the sharp detail of the portrait notable. James F. Gibson, the photographer, recorded many scenes of the Army of the Potomac's camps and officers in this period. Kilpatrick, a young and aggressive commander, led the 3rd Division of the Cavalry Corps through the campaigns of that year.
