Porterville, in Tulare County at the edge of the Sierra Nevada foothills, was a farm town in 1914, with its fortunes tied to citrus, grapes and deciduous fruit grown on land watered from the Tule River. Oranges drew growers and buyers into the valley, and packing houses and shipping sheds turned the harvest into cash each season. Rail service on the Southern Pacific carried fruit out of the valley toward markets elsewhere in California and beyond. Most residents would have known the town as a community of churches, schools and modest commercial blocks, its daily rhythm set by irrigation and picking time rather than by heavy industry.
