Ocean Park, a beach community in Los Angeles County next to Santa Monica, was in 1914 one of the seaside resorts that drew city residents west on electric streetcars. The Pacific Electric lines had made day trips to the ocean cheap and routine, and bathhouses, amusements and a pier catered to summer crowds. Across the region, Los Angeles was growing quickly, and the land booms of the previous decades had turned farmland and bean fields into subdivided lots. Motion picture companies were also beginning to use the coast and nearby beaches as film settings, an early sign of the changes ahead. Most residents would have known the town as a cooler place to escape the inland heat.
