Lemon Cove, a small farming community in eastern Tulare County, sat in the foothills where the Sierra Nevada slopes meet the San Joaquin Valley floor. By 1914 its economy rested almost entirely on citrus, with lemon and orange groves watered by Kaweah River irrigation. Growers relied on local packing houses and rail shipments to send fruit to distant markets, and the nearby town of Lindsay was tied into the same network. Residents would have known the district as one of the valley's productive citrus areas, where pruning, irrigating and picking followed the seasons and a town's fortunes rose and fell with the price of fruit.
