Nye County, Nevada, was in the middle of a mining boom in 1908, a few years after the silver strike at Tonopah in 1900 and the gold rush at Goldfield in 1903 had drawn prospectors, investors, and promoters into the central part of the state. The Goldbar district, where the Homestake Goldbar mine worked its gold claims, shared in that wave of activity, with mill operators and mine crews drawn to a remote country of sagebrush and dry washes. Life in such camps revolved around the shift whistle, the assay office, the company store, and the saloon, and a mine's fortunes could rise or collapse within months as ore grades changed. Nevada's total population was small at the time, so a single productive camp could shape the economy of a whole county, and the people working there would have measured their town by how steadily its ore reached the mill.
