Reno, Nevada, in 1908 was a railroad town on the Truckee River, where the Southern Pacific main line and its shops gave many residents steady wages. Its economy also leaned on ranching and mining in the surrounding counties, and goods moved through the city to camps and towns across western Nevada. The University of Nevada had been located in Reno since 1886, so the town had a campus alongside its depots and business blocks. Residents were also becoming known beyond the state for something else: after Nevada shortened its residency requirement for divorce, people from elsewhere began arriving to establish residence, and hotels and boarding houses drew a steady stream of visitors. Local people of the day would have recognized the town first as a place of rail traffic and quiet streets, and only second as a divorce destination.
