Tonopah, the seat of Nye County, Nevada, was by 1913 a mining town past the wildest years of its silver rush, though its hillside streets still held the offices, assay houses, and boarding houses that a generation of prospectors had built. Ore from the Tonopah mines continued to support the camp's payroll, and mining work increasingly meant deeper shafts and larger companies rather than the quick claims of the early years. Residents watched the price of silver and the output of nearby districts closely, since a slow season could empty the saloons and send men on to the next strike. This 1913 view records a town that had settled into permanence, with families, churches, and schools taking up space alongside the mine works on the ridges.
