Tonopah, in Nye County, Nevada, was a silver mining camp at the height of its first boom in 1907. Prospector Jim Butler's 1900 strike had set off a rush across the high desert, and by the middle of the decade mining companies, assayers, saloons, and freight outfits crowded the hillside town. Ore hauled out by wagon and rail kept the camp's mines running, and the nearby Goldfield strike drew even more men and capital into the region. Residents of the day knew Tonopah as a place where fortunes rose and fell with each new shaft and assay report, and this view shows the town as it spread across its slopes during that rush.
