Tonopah in 1909 was still a silver mining town clinging to steep slopes, its population swollen by miners, teamsters, and merchants who had followed the ore veins into the Nevada highlands. The Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad carried ore and supplies between the camp and the boomtown to the south, linking the two districts' fortunes. That year the Nevada legislature passed a law outlawing gambling, a measure that struck at the card rooms and saloons long central to Tonopah's nightlife. Miners still went underground each morning and judged their wages by the next assay report, while families pressed for schools and churches on the crowded hillside. The panorama shows a camp at a point where its raw boom was settling into a more permanent, uneasy town.
