Rawhide, Nevada, in 1909 was a young gold camp in the hills of western Nevada, part of a mining rush that followed the strikes at Tonopah and Goldfield earlier in the decade. Prospectors, assayers, and investors streamed in, and the town grew quickly from tents and rough frame buildings into a crowded street of hotels, saloons, stores, and boarding houses. Water, lumber, and supplies had to be hauled in, and the camp's fortunes rose and fell with the ore it could produce and the money men were willing to spend on it. A panoramic view from this period shows a settlement still so new that its streets and building lots seem to be laid out on the slope itself, a place its residents expected to prosper for years.
