Reno, Nevada, in 1908 was a railroad and ranching town of a few thousand people on the Truckee River, where the Southern Pacific line and the cattle and mining trade gave it its working character. The University of Nevada had been located there since 1886, and the town's streets, churches, and downtown blocks were spreading across the river valley below the Sierra foothills. Reno was also gaining a reputation that few outsiders had expected: Nevada's short residency rule for divorce drew a steady stream of visitors who stayed at local hotels while they waited out the requirement. An aerial view like this one would have shown residents their own town laid out in a single frame, with its rail yards, commercial core, and the open country beyond the city limits.
