McGill, in White Pine County, Nevada, was a company smelter town in 1909, built to process copper from the mines of the Ely district. The Nevada Consolidated Copper Company ran the works, and the smelter's stacks and ore bins dominated a town that existed mainly because of the plant. Copper prices and steady ore shipments shaped daily life there, so workers' wages, company housing, and the schedule of shifts followed the furnaces around the clock. Eastern Nevada was then a region of boomtowns and mining camps, and McGill, like Ely to the south, depended on rail lines to bring in coal and coke and carry out refined metal. A photograph of the smelter in this year shows a place built for production rather than for leisure.
