Goldfield, Nevada, in 1909 was a mining town past its population peak, and its payrolls and ore shipments still set the rhythm of daily life. Labor trouble in 1907 and 1908, when the Western Federation of Miners struck the district and state militia were called in, had left the miners' union weakened and the camp uneasy. Ore still moved from the mills toward rail connections, and the Goldfield Hotel, a large hotel completed in 1908, stood as a showpiece of the money that had built the town. Residents who remembered the tent days now followed mine reports and stock quotations that arrived from eastern cities.
