Ruth, a copper camp in White Pine County, Nevada, was taking shape in 1909 on the edge of the Robinson mining district, a few miles from the town of Ely. Copper was the reason for the place. Large-scale open-pit and low-grade ore methods had recently made the district's ore worth digging, and the Nevada Northern Railway, built into Ely in the middle of the decade, carried ore and supplies in and out. Mining companies housed their workers in rows of frame houses and boarding facilities near the workings, so daily life revolved around shift whistles, company stores, and the dust and smoke of the mines. Men who worked there would have known the district above all as a copper camp, one whose fortunes rose and fell with the metal's price and with the decisions of distant corporate offices.
