Ruth, Nevada, in White Pine County, was a copper mining camp in 1912, a few miles from the older county seat of Ely. Its ore came from the open pit that Nevada Consolidated Copper Company was developing, and the ore moved by rail on the Nevada Northern Railway, which carried it down to smelters at McGill. Much of the town's life followed the company's schedule, with shifts, company housing, and the steady rhythm of the pit and the train yards. Residents of the region knew the district mainly for copper, and the early twentieth-century boom that drew miners, merchants, and families from across the West to this remote stretch of eastern Nevada. The panorama shows the camp at a moment when its fortunes rested almost entirely on that one commodity.
