Veteran, Nevada, photographed in 1912, sat in a state whose economy still rested on mining, cattle and sheep, and on the railroads that carried ore and livestock out of the desert. Nevada's population was only about 82,000 at the 1910 census, so a small town like Veteran would have been a close-knit community where residents knew one another and gathered for church, school and civic events. The years just before 1912 had seen mining booms at Tonopah and Goldfield that drew thousands of workers, followed by declines that left many smaller towns more dependent on local ranching and freight. Because I cannot confirm the details of Veteran's own history from this record, the wider picture of a sparsely settled, mining-and-ranching state in the early 1910s is the most reliable context for the scene.
