Tonopah, Nevada, in 1918 was a silver mining town that had already passed its peak, though its mines and mills still employed many of the men living on the hillside. The war drew young men into the armed forces and raised demand for metals, and residents followed news from Europe as closely as they tracked ore shipments leaving by rail. That autumn the influenza epidemic that swept the United States reached Nevada, and public gatherings in towns like Tonopah were curtailed while families waited anxiously for news of the sick. Mining still kept the camp's payroll alive, but many residents were already wondering how long the ore would last.
