Searchlight, Nevada, in 1910 was a mining camp in the southern Nevada desert, about 60 miles south of Las Vegas, that had grown up after gold was found in the surrounding hills in 1897. Its fortunes rose and fell with the ore it produced, and the Quartette and other nearby claims drew prospectors, miners, and the merchants who supplied them. The town still lay within Lincoln County until Clark County was created in 1909, so local officials were newly adjusting to a different county seat. Residents would have known Searchlight first as a mining town, where water was hauled in, heat was relentless, and a rail spur linked the camp to the wider region.
