Las Vegas in 1910 was a small railroad town in the Las Vegas Valley of southern Nevada, where the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad had auctioned its townsite lots in 1905 and built a division point beside the tracks. Water from artesian wells and the springs that gave the town its name made irrigated farming possible on the flat ground around it, and alfalfa was among the most useful crops, since it fed the horses, mules and cattle that moved freight and supplied local ranges. Most residents depended on the railroad, on freighting, or on the ranches and small businesses that served them. The town would not incorporate until 1911, so civic life was still loosely organized, and the fields shown here were the working land that supported it.
